The Hanns-Seidel-Foundation is carrying out a 15-month EU-funded project in cooperation with the Nahdlatul Ulama and International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) with the title “Support for Democratization through Islam Dialogue”. This Project is from utmost importance against the background of increased violent intra- and inter-religious conflicts in the recent years in Indonesia. The existence of various interpretations of Islam in Indonesia has created tensions between the different faith groups. While the majority of the Indonesian Muslim community upholds the values of democracy and pluralism, there are a small but growing number of hard-liners who oppose democracy and religious tolerance towards minorities.
