Project Overview and Objectives

This project is co-funded by the European Union
  http://ec.europa.eu/europeaid/index_en.htm

This project, which is scheduled to be implemented from January 2012 until April 2013, aims to achieve the following long-term objective: to contribute to the promotion of greater political tolerance and pluralism between different social and religious groups. It aims to raise awareness of a broad population in Indonesia on the following principles: democracy, pluralism, rule of law, human rights and gender equality.

The six designated project regions (provinces) are:

*Riau, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, East Java, South Kalimantan and West Nusa Tenggara.

In order to reach a maximum number of people and participants, the project targets followers of the biggest Islamic mass movements Nahdlatul Ulama as main project partner, ICIS as NU’s think tank and the Muhammadiyah organization as affiliated partner. These three organizations will be able to reach the Islamic grass-root population through spiritual leaders, Islamic scholars, Heads of Islamic boarding schools as well as functionaries of the aforementioned organizations. To measure the achievements of the overall and specific objectives, different indicators have been set, e.g.:

  • The number of intra- and inter-faith dialogue activities in the project region has increased

  • The acceptance of regulations based on the constitution has increased within the Indonesian society

  • The acceptance of Pancasila with its core belief “unity in diversity”, emphasizing tolerance and pluralism has been strengthened amongst the participants of the workshops in the project regions

In cooperation with the long-standing partner of HSS, the moderate Islamic mass movement Nahdlatul Ulama, it is envisaged to elaborate training modules on pluralism and religious tolerance for Islamic schools. The values that are being taught through these modules are based on the Indonesian Constitution and on the general values of human rights which are, according to moderate Islam interpretations, compatible to this religion. This approach finally aims to promote the idea of the congruency of Islam and democracy & pluralism.
