Workshop enhances integration of Corporate Social Responsibility in Myanmar’s economic development

On May 12th, 2012, the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry UMFCCI hosted a Workshop on Corporate Social Responsibility supported by Hanns Seidel Foundation HSF. Among the speakers were U Win Aung (President of UMFCCI), Prof Dr Aung Tun Thet (Senior Advisor, UN Resident Coordinator’s Office), as well as three international experts. Together with more than 120 guests, the high ranking speakers discussed the importance of CSR for the sustainable development of Myanmar’s economic environment.

After an introduction into the concept of CSR and its possibilities, the speakers presented national and international experiences. During the last session, a possible way forward was mapped out. The 120 guest participated in the discussions with great interest, and shared their personal experiences and opinions with the present policy makers and researchers. Many of the small Myanmar entrepreneurs already lead their businesses socially responsible. The workshop strengthened their confidence, and provided the opportunity to discuss practical problems and solutions in the implementation of CSR. Participants and speakers agreed that caring for environmental and social aspects is a crucial part of a sustainable economic development strategy for Myanmar.

This workshop is the first in a series of similar activities on the topic. The successful implementation of the event is definitely promising for future workshops.
