Institute for International Cooperation

Beginning with the first development aid project in Togo in 1977, the Institute for International Cooperation has steadily expanded its geographical and conceptual framework. Project work in Africa still constitutes one of the main focal points today.

In the Hanns Seidel Foundation’s concept of development policy, strengthening underlying social factors is regarded as just as important as promoting social political structures. This means improving, strengthening and utilizing human capacities, taking into account the social, political, cultural and economic conditions of the country in question. Promoting a sense of democratic community while preserving traditions which deserve to be preserved are among the principles of the Hanns Seidel Foundation’s development cooperation. All projects are designed in such a way that the countries or partner organizations can take them over themselves in the course of time.

Activating self-help and individual initiative is our approach and our task for the future

With employees in the Munich headquarters and 31 employees abroad, the Hanns Seidel Foundation manages 95 projects worldwide in 60 different countries (as per 2011). 

Helping people to help themselves

Industrialized nations and developing countries are parts of a single world, today more than ever before. This means that we can only tackle the future together. Only social and economic conditions, stability of aw and the separation of powers are the cornerstones of just political, social and economic development. This is more than purely humanitarian aid, namely the promotion of political stability and economic efficiency in the Third World.

Development Cooperation Activities focused on the following:

  • Professional Development and Management Training: participation here was prioritised to target and primarily empower women
  • Socio-Political Adult Education and Civil Society activities
  • Involvement in the Creation of Organisational Structures of cooperatives, associations and guilds
  • Advancement of Administrative Structures and Engagement in the Creation of State Institutions particularly to further citizen- and performance-oriented administrations and through legal and administrative consultancy
  • Consulting with Governments, Political Parties, etc. regarding reforms in political, economic and social areas
  • Support of Rural Development and Improvement of Infrastructure

  • Bulgaria: management consultancy for leaders in the field of politics, economics and administration
  • Croatia: advancement of administration and institutions
  • Peru: socio-political adult education, building of governmental and civil society institutions (communal and non-governmental)
  • Philippines: empowering the micro finance sector; strengthening human rights and communal administration
  • China: advancement of reforms in educational, social and societal areas, development in rural areas and structurally week regions
  • Mongolia: legal and administrative consultancy
  • Egypt: promoting the decentralisation of the administration through information and communication centres (Nile Centres), regional development
  • Tanzania: building democratic, constitutional and economic structures, empowering civil society, poverty reduction
