Beschreibung

The United Republic of Tanzania is an Eastern African country, member of the East African Commu-nity (EAC), Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) and of course the African Union. As its name indicates, it is a union of two countries, Tanganyika and Zanzibar, which formed a new country and agreed to name it the "United Republic of Tanzania" in April 1964. The participation of women in politics has been steadily advancing through the various phases of Tanzania's political history. This paper seeks to highlight the brief history of the part women have played in politics in general, and the role of gender equality and women's rights in sustainable socioeconomic development. Furthermore, it is in particular the experience of women's participation in Parliament which will be used to illustrate how the different strategies adopted by Tanzania on women's representation have worked out, the successes recorded and the challenges encountered.
